What is the West Virginia Urban Ag Conference?

The WV Urban Ag Conference will feature two days of hands-on workshops for home gardeners, urban homesteaders and urban farmers. Learn about garden basics, marketing farm products, home preserving and more from industry experts, extension educators, farmers and others. The event has been held annually since 2014 and attracts attendees from throughout the tristate area.

Who goes to this conference?

This conference is geared toward anyone who is interested in learning how to simply keep their backyard garden alive (you know who you are!) to those who are producing on a small scale and are ready to start selling. We structure our workshop topics so that people of all skill levels will find something that appeals to their interests and capabilities.

Why should I go? I’m not a farmer, nor do I live in the city.

You don’t have to be a farmer or live in the city to enjoy urban agriculture. The workshops that are offered throughout the conference will give you an opportunity to learn first-hand from local experts on topics such as raised bed gardening, cheese making, composting, home brewing, beekeeping, setting up a small business and more. Plus, there will be vendors on hand giving out additional information.

Who hosts the conference?

The conference planning committee is made up of representatives from a variety of agricultural agencies: Capitol Conservation District, West Virginia State University Extension Service, Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE), the West Virginia Conservation Agency, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), West Virginia University Extension Service, the West Virginia Department of Agriculture and the West Virginia National Guard. Plenty of our speakers and vendors represent even more agencies and farming enterprises from throughout the state.

Who is this Chicken Stu character I keep hearing about?

Good question! Chicken Stu is our conference “spokes chicken.” During our first year, Stu took to social media to share his journey from the farm to the city and fell so in love with urban farming that he decide to remain a city slicker. He’s a very urban bird – he even wears a necktie. You’ll see Stu in our official conference logo and in our marketing materials. For our fifth conference this year, Stu is spoofing fifth movie sequels in a series of posters and trailers that poke fun such films as Star Wars, Harry Potter and Police Academy.
